Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the use of digital devices, including smartphone, on eyes and musculoskeletal system (MS) among university students in the era of COVID-19.

Methods : Data obtained from 156 university students were analyzed with an online survey in November 2022. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions related to computer vision syndrome (CVS), and 11 questions related to the MS, including the general characteristics of the subjects. CVS was evaluated on a frequency of 0~2 points and intensity at 1~2 points, and MS pain was evaluated on a 3-point scale by dividing it into mild, moderate and severe symptoms.

Results : The average daily use of digital devices was 7.97¡¾3.46 hours, with laptops (47.4%), tablets (33.3%), desktops (12.2%) and smartphones (7.1%) for online classes. Regular daily exercise was 22.4% of the participants. Symptoms associated with CVS scored the highest for eye dryness, while neck pain was the most severe for the MS. As the time spent using digital devices increased, the pain in the trunk (neck, back and lower back) and the total MS score became more severe, and when taking online classes using a laptop or smartphone, the upper extremity pain score was higher compared to using a desktop. Regular daily exercise was associated with less pain in CVS and MS pain than when not doing it.

Conclusion : Prolonged use of digital devices and the type of devices used during online classes affected eyes and musculoskeletal pain. The results of this study showed that convergent research and management of the eye and MS are needed together in the future.
